A handy and convenient accessory for kayaking anglers. This easy-to-install rod holder mounts on any kayak deck to add convenient and secure placement for your rod so you can free your hands for other things. It features an angled design and a clean, natural surface-mounted look.
This worked really well for my kayak. I installed it into a Pelican Strike 100x kayak and the entire install took less than 30 minutes. My tool list for the install was as follows:
Jigsaw (to cut the large hole) Drill (1/2" for pilot hole and then 3/16" for the rivet/screw holes) Pop Rivet gun (used instead of screws) Aluminum Rivets (1/2" worked perfect for this) Marker for marking cuts and holes Silicon (not necessary, but I added to ensure water tight)
As many other's have detailed do not use the gasket as the guide for marking the screw holes. I used the gasket to mark the main hole then I used the rod holder itself to mark the location of the screw/rivet holes. See the attached short video that details my install, hope it helps! You can't for wrong with these holders for the price!

My first reaction upon receiving the rod holder is that it is BIG. Both longer and wider than is needed to hold any of my fishing rods. Better that than the opposite, though, so I went ahead and installed it.
The first step was obsessively figuring our where to mount it. I would have preferred to mount it abaft the seat, but my kayak (a Sun Dolphin Aruba 10) did not offer a good spot there, in part because the holder is so large. I settled on a spot near the front of the cockpit after determining that the holder would not get in the way of my leg inside the 'yak and the fishing rod would not interfere with my paddle stroke. I obviously will not be able to troll from there, but did not plan to, anyway.
As others have noted, the gasket is of little use. It is not cut to the shape of the holder and the screw holes are not in the right place. It was useful, however, for tracing the hole for the holder. I did that and threw the gasket away.
I cut the hole with a Dremel tool and placed the holder in the hole, using the actual screw holes to mark the spots. I then removed the holder, drilled out the holes, put a generous amount of Marine Goop on the underside of the holder and put it back in the hole, then secured it with tri-grip rivets. I added a nylon eye strap right next to it for a rod leash, also secured with the rivets, and put another strap in an unused area to hold a fish stringer.
Everything looks good and seems really secure and I'm looking forward to taking the 'yak out on a fishing trip.
I purchased two of these for my Vapor XT Kayak. It was a very simple process to install-the vapor has two flat spots for that purpose (they come already installed on the fishing model for a couple hundred bucks more). The enclosed template works well, however, I found it easier to cut the main hole, then dry fit the rod holder and mark the screw positions and drill the screw holes based on that. The directions call for screws that are just a bit too short for my kayak, so I did have to go up 1/8th in length. I used a battery operated jig saw without splintering or difficulty. This was the first time I have done anything of this nature and it took me about 30 minutes for the first one and 20 for the second.
Once mounted, they lay very flush and smooth with no jagged edges. They have a professional appearance and most importantly, they work very well.
