Hello, I purchased this product with the intentions of free flight training my young B&G Macaw. The set up was fairly easy and looked very durable. However, on the first day of bringing my macaw and the flight line to the park we came across some issues. We started the day with some recall training and running flights using the harness not attached to the flight line. After some recall we attached the heavy line/keyring to the ground set up and checked the line to make sure it was secure. We pulled it in several directions to see if it would snap off and it did not, so we proceeded with the training. After the first couple flight loops/circles we let her take a snack and water break before letting her do another round. Once again, we checked the line and all seemed ok, so we proceeded once more. However, as she flew into her second lap around, the keyring attached to the ground line slipped off and my macaw took off flying (partially confused and partially caught by the somewhat strong winds). She flew about 100ft or so with the line attached until she luckily landed on one of the soccer goals at the park where she gladly came back to me. So...that was a crazy first experience.
I do like this product but it can be dangerous. I will be taping the keyring in the future so this accident does not happen again, and of course continue doing recall training everyday so if it does happen she will most likely turn and fly back. Yes, free flight training is risky but in order to get to that point make sure that you always, always, check the RING and line before every flight.

Just reminder to keep checking the line as it tends to knot up as your pet flies from one location to another. When that happens the only way to undo the knot is to unwind it from one end. If there was a way to ensure that the knot wouldn’t happen it would have gotten 5 stars. Learned that the hard way. My bird attempted s flight and was cut short due to this problem! Careful
I got my first Aviator Harness in 2012 and absolutely loved it. My Blue and Gold Macaw loves to go hiking, walking on the beach, road trips across county in our car, he is up for everything. He is never left alone in his harness, EVER. So I was surprised when my daughter (38yrs old) looked up and saw the harness still on the bird, but the leash had fallen away. The metal clasp holding the harness to the leash was open! Not something you want to see in a fully flighted bird.
So I thought, wow what a fluke, so I ordered another Aviator Harness......A week later the same thing happened!
It is advertised as ESCAPE PROOF! Maybe it is escape proof for the smaller birds, but if you own anything the size of an African Grey or larger that connection is not strong enough to stand up to their beaks. This happened in front of us so quickly that it would make your head spin. My bird is loving and gentle, he is not the angry sort that rips up everything he touches, but he is curious though. The metal piece holding the leash on had a small crevice, the tongue felt it and in microseconds the strength of his beak had opened it.
I can't even recommend this for smaller birds because the hardware being used for them is probably smaller than the ones I had.
Currently my bird is grounded to the house only going outside in his travel cage, he looks so forlorn. We may not be able to travel because of CoVid-19, but he is at the very least used to sitting on my shoulder as I walk around my garden. It's been hard on both of us, but think what could have happened, had we not quickly recognized what happened and instantly acted , he could of taken flight, gotten hurt or killed, all because we relied on the advertised ESCAPE PROOF statement.
